We’re almost two thirds of the way through National Home Security Month 2017 and as a hardware supplier we see handles and locks in all states. We’re more than familiar with the devastation old and badly maintained hardware can lead to, so here are some of our top tips:
An astonishing 73% of burglars access their target through the front door. Lock your door when you leave (16% won’t do so for Bonfire Night or Halloween!) or if you’re away from your door (lounging in the bath; watching a loud film…). A thumb-turn cylinder means you can do so without the need for a key when you’re indoors.
Put it on display
Your security measures that is! Use a Patlock on French door handles; fit cable restrictors to your windows. A home without a security system is 300% more likely to be burgled. Additionally, consider that lovely big hedge that gives you all that privacy… and the privacy it might give to any burglar. This homeowner was lucky they had the right cylinder!
Be a Peeping Tom
You could invest in a digital door viewer, but a spy hole or door chain would also do the job. The spy hole or digital viewer means that you don’t even have to open the door to see who’s there. When over 17,000 distraction burglaries happen each year, not opening up seems even more appealing!
Light it up
Motion sensor lights are a great investment – not only do they make it easier for you coming home on these soon-to-be dark evenings, but they also foil any burglar looking for a property to raid under the cover of darkness. Don’t forget to light the sides and rear of your property as well! Timer switches on lights in several rooms are also worthwhile considering if you’re often out when it’s dark – look for options that enable you to select a random pattern then anyone who’s on the hunt for a target won’t necessarily be able to work out a pattern or routine and therefore wouldn’t necessarily want to chance the homeowner being present.
Make some noise
One of the most visual deterrents you could engage is an alarm – and many household insurance policies will give discounts if you have an appropriately installed and maintained alarm system. Despite this, only 30% of homeowners have one in place. Whether you opt for wired or wireless, monitored, dialler or bells-only, the loud blaring noises they all emit don’t make the best accompaniment for a stealth burglar!
Pimp your lock
One of the major weak points in any house is the door lock. Cylinders are small, but are mighty in terms of the protection they can give. Here at UPVC Maintenance we offer an array of cylinders to suit all requirements. At the top of the range is the Ultion, whose cylinder foiled the burglary in the video above. If you need further proof of what a relatively small investment can provide, there’s another video here which shows a comparison between a “standard” cylinder under attack, and an Ultion.
Pump up the jam
UPVC windows and doors? There's a nifty little device on the market called a sash jammer. These add an extra layer of security and protect against someone trying to jemmy the window by levering the window mechanism out of place. They're available as locking or non-locking items and are incredibly quick and easy to install.
